Flight

Launch from Cape Canaveral (KSC); landing in the South Pacific between New Zeeland and Samoa.

Third lunar landing attempt. The mission was aborted after rupture of service module oxygen tank. The explosion of the fuel cell tank onboard, resulting in loss of all power and oxygen, forced Apollo 13 to circle the moon without landing and immediately return to Earth. Life risk for the astronauts because of oxygen and energy problems. The energy was pushed down to the lowest minimum and it became very cold in the LM. LM was used as "lifeboat"; course corrections with LM power. The recovery ship was "USS Ivo Jima".
