Mission objectives

Was planned as the first manned flight of an Apollo spacecraft (Block I, earth orbit version). On December 22, 1966 was announced that the crewmembers (Walter Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham) of the then cancelled second Block I mission (Apollo 2 (AS-205)) would become the backup crew of Apollo 1. Gus Grissom (Commander), Edward White (Senior Pilot) and Roger Chaffee (Pilot) were killed in a fire while testing their capsule on the pad on January 27, 1967.
